Who is MACTE?
Vision: As leaders in teacher education, MACTE serves all learners in an ever-changing society through its commitment to high and consistent standards for every teacher.
Mission: The mission of the Minnesota Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE) is to bring together schools, colleges and departments of education to provide leadership in the preparation of highly qualified professional educators.
MACTE is a voluntary organization comprised of 31 educational institutions and a couple more affiliate members. We are dedicated to providing standards and leadership in the preparation and development of highly qualified professional educators. MACTE represents all three Minnesota education systems including: seven Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, three University of Minnesota campuses, and 21 independent colleges. Our teacher preparation programs offer diversity in size, focus and delivery, but all are designed to prepare quality teachers for Minnesota’s schools. MACTE was founded in 1973. Our mission is three-fold: 1) to clarify and address issues in teaching and learning; 2) to promote quality teacher preparation and development; and 3) to share the collective knowledge and data of all state-approved teacher education programs.
We work together and with P-12 schools, education organizations and other agencies to promote and assure teacher quality and student learning. In 1997, with the support of a grant, we collaborated with the Board of Teaching and convened the first Minnesota Teacher Education Congress, to which all educators from teacher preparation programs were invited. Since, MACTE has funded these meetings through our own organization and today, we gather between 150 and 200 teacher educators from across the state twice annually to address and discuss state and national educational issues. Representatives from the Board of Teaching and the Minnesota State Department of Education typically attend to exchange news and share perspectives with MACTE members. The MACTE Congresses have become to our members what the annual Education Minnesota Professional Conference is for Minnesota teachers.
